DOG JOBS TRAINING – SNIFFER DOGS

Every day, specially trained detector dogs help protect airports by using their extraordinary sense of smell. A dog’s nose contains up to 300 million scent receptors, compared with around six million in humans, making them one of nature’s most effective detection systems.

Airport sniffer dogs are trained to detect explosives, illegal drugs, firearms, prohibited food products and even large amounts of undeclared cash. Their work helps keep passengers safe while also protecting Australia’s agriculture from pests and diseases that could arrive in imported food or plant material.

Training relies almost entirely on positive reinforcement. When a dog correctly identifies a target scent, it receives a favourite toy or enthusiastic praise as its reward. Over time, the dog learns to associate finding a particular smell with something enjoyable.

Breeds commonly used include Labrador Retrievers, Beagles, German Shepherds and Springer Spaniels. Their friendly appearance allows them to work calmly around large crowds while remaining focused on the task.

When a detector dog indicates it has found something suspicious, its handler investigates further. The dog itself never makes an arrest or accusation—it simply alerts its handler to a scent.
