BOJI: THE TURKISH STREET DOG WHO BECAME A PUBLIC TRANSPORT CELEBRITY

Every city has its local characters, but few have captured hearts around the world quite like Boji, the famous street dog of Istanbul, Turkey. With his calm nature, intelligence, and love of adventure, Boji became an international sensation after commuters noticed him regularly travelling across one of the world’s busiest cities using public transport entirely on his own.

Boji is a large mixed-breed dog, believed to have Anatolian Shepherd ancestry. Unlike most stray dogs, he seemed to have mastered Istanbul’s complex transport network. He was frequently seen boarding buses, trams, metro trains and even ferries that cross the Bosphorus between Europe and Asia. Rather than wandering aimlessly, Boji appeared to know exactly where he was going, patiently waiting at stations before hopping aboard with the daily commuters.

When Istanbul’s transport authority became curious about their unusual passenger, they fitted Boji with a GPS tracker after ensuring he was vaccinated and healthy. The results amazed everyone. Boji was found to travel as much as 30 kilometres in a single day, visiting dozens of metro stations and regularly switching between different forms of transport. He always behaved impeccably, often finding a quiet place to lie down until it was time to get off.

Passengers quickly fell in love with their four-legged travelling companion. Thousands shared photographs and videos online, and Boji became a social media star. Tourists began hoping to spot him during their visits to Istanbul, while locals regarded him as a symbol of the city’s unique relationship with its street animals. Unlike many cities, Istanbul has long been known for caring for its free-roaming dogs and cats, with residents often providing food, water and affection.

Not everything was smooth sailing. In 2021, Boji was falsely accused of making a mess on a tram. Security camera footage later proved that another person had deliberately framed the dog by placing the mess on a seat after Boji had already left. Public sympathy for Boji grew even stronger once his innocence was established.

In 2022, Boji’s story received a happy ending when he was adopted by Turkish businessman Ömer Koç. Although he now enjoys the comfort and safety of a permanent home, he has continued to make occasional public appearances, delighting the many people who followed his remarkable adventures.

Boji’s story reminds us that dogs are incredibly intelligent, adaptable and capable of forming special connections with people they have never met. His daily journeys brought smiles to countless commuters and showed that kindness towards animals can enrich an entire community.

Whether travelling by ferry across the Bosphorus or snoozing peacefully on a metro train, Boji proved that sometimes the most memorable passengers travel on four legs instead of two.
