DOG JOBS TRAINING – CADAVER DOGS

Cadaver dogs perform one of the most challenging and important jobs in search and rescue. These specially trained dogs can detect the scent of human remains, even when they are buried underground, submerged in water or hidden beneath rubble.

Their remarkable noses are capable of identifying tiny amounts of odour that humans cannot detect. This allows search teams to locate missing people far more quickly than would otherwise be possible.

Training begins with teaching the dog to recognise specific human decomposition scents. Whenever the dog successfully locates the target scent, it receives a reward such as a favourite toy or game. Through repeated practice in different environments, the dog develops the skills needed to work in forests, buildings, waterways and disaster zones.

Cadaver dogs have assisted after earthquakes, floods, bushfires and other natural disasters. They also help police investigate missing person cases and provide answers to families who have spent months or even years searching for loved ones.

Although their work is emotionally demanding for the humans involved, the dogs simply see it as another rewarding search game with their handler.
