DOG WALKING IN CHINA: A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE

Dog ownership has grown rapidly in China, especially in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. As a result, dog walking has become part of daily life for millions of pet owners.

Walking a dog in China’s crowded cities can be quite different from walking one in Australia. Many people live in high-rise apartments, so dogs depend on their daily walks for exercise and stimulation. Parks and open spaces become busy in the early morning and evening as owners head out with their pets.

One unusual sight is the popularity of pet strollers. Small breeds, elderly dogs and puppies are sometimes wheeled to parks before being allowed to walk and explore. This helps keep them safe on busy streets and crowded footpaths.

Fashion is another distinctive feature of dog walking in China. Many owners dress their dogs in colourful jackets and outfits. Some clothing is practical for cold weather, while other outfits are simply for fun and often attract attention from passers-by.

In some neighbourhoods, groups of owners meet each evening, turning a routine walk into a social event. Dogs enjoy exercise and interaction, while owners enjoy conversation and companionship.

Despite these differences, the goal is the same as anywhere else: giving dogs exercise, mental stimulation and quality time with their humans.
